How to get your SIN Number in Canada
The SIN (Social Insurance Number) is required to work. Eligibility, documents, and the 3 ways to apply.
The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number required to work in Canada, get paid by an employer, or access government programs and benefits. Without it, no employer can legally pay you.
Key requirement: your study permit must explicitly state you're authorized to work (wording like "may accept employment" or "may work on or off campus"). If your permit doesn't say that, you're not eligible yet.
Documents you need:
- Your valid study permit (primary document)
- Passport (secondary ID)
- Proof of Canadian address
How to apply (3 ways):
1. In person at a Service Canada Centre — the fastest method: you walk out with your SIN the same day. There are 600+ centres across the country.
2. Online — only if you're already physically in Canada with a Canadian address. Takes 5–10 business days; once processed, you view and print it from your My Service Canada Account (MSCA).
3. By mail — send certified copies of your original documents plus a paper form. Takes 20+ business days; use this only if you can't go in person.
Recommendation: go in person if you can — it's free, fast, and you avoid mailing original documents.
Never share your SIN over an unverified message, email, or form — it's just as sensitive as your credit card number.
